Timothy Johnson found an opening and took advantage of it Saturday at UFC Fight Night 63, destroying Shamil Abdurahimov and picking up his first Octagon victory.
Johnson improved to 9-1 in his career, winning his eighth straight overall.
“There is no better feeling than fighting and achieving the pinnacle of your sport,” said Johnson, who was greeted with a thunderous chant of “USA, USA” after the win. “To make it in the UFC and get a win in my first fight is a storybook.”
The heavyweights went toe-to-toe early on, but it was Johnson who landed a takedown and followed up with nasty ground-and-pound.
“I’m still at the bottom of the poll, but I’m so happy with whatever comes next,” he said. “I’ll be ready whenever.”
