The UFC completed a two-day doubleheader of events with UFC on FOX 13 Saturday night. The event featured three heavyweight battles and a lightweight affair from Phoenix.
Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic engaged in a five-round, 25-minute battle between two heavyweights, with “Cigano” coming out on top.
Both men, though, were declared ultimate winners after the contest, as they earned “Fight of the Night” honors.
Here’s a look at three stars from the show, including dos Santos-Miocic:
Junior dos Santos-Stipe Miocic
It’s hard to fault the effort of Miocic, as the underdog came right out and took it to dos Santos, winning the early stages of the fight. The face of the former champ looked like he had been in there with Cain Velasquez again, but Miocic was unable to keep the pressure on for five rounds like Velasquez.
Still, Miocic isn’t going anywhere. He’s still young in the MMA game, and showed that his skills are continuing to develop on a daily basis. Fighting 25 minutes with dos Santos will only give him more confidence and more ammunition to train even harder.
As for dos Santos, he staked his claim to being the best heavyweight not named Velasquez. While Fabricio Werdum is the interim champion and likely next fighter for the champ, there is no reason for the Brazilian to be outside of either a No. 1 contender match or fill-in to meet either of the Top-2 next.
