What a way to kickoff 2015 by the UFC, as Jon Jones successfully defended his light heavyweight title with a decision victory over previously-unbeaten Daniel Cormier at UFC 182.
Jones and Cormier delivered on the big stage, finishing out a night that was dominated by decisions.
All five main card bouts went to the scorecards, making it the second-longest UFC event in terms of in-Octagon fight time at 154 minutes and 56 seconds.
Here’s a look at three stars from the night:
There’s really no doubting the champion anymore after controlling Cormier and handing the former Olympian his first pro defeat.
Not only did “Bones” do that, he out-wrestled the wrestler. Yes, Jones has a background in the sport himself, but through 15 pro fights, Cormier has yet to be taken down.
Jones did it five times.
Throughout the 25-minute battle, Jones dominated, landing sharp elbows, quick kicks and those all-important takedowns. While he didn’t get the finish, he started off 2015 with a commanding performance and left no doubt who the man is at 205 pounds.
