The UFC hit Mexico with a bang this past Saturday night, as 21,000 fans packed the Arena Ciudad de Mexico to witness Fabricio Werdum become the interim heavyweight champion at UFC 180.
While the card lost some luster due to injuries to Cain Velasquez, Diego Sanchez, Erik Perez and Joe Lauzon, it still brought with it some incredible performances.
Here’s a look at three stars from the show:
This one was a no-doubter, as Werdum survived an early onslaught from Mark Hunt to win the title. In delivering a highlight-reel flying knee, Werdum cemented his status among the elite in the division.
After taking some heavy shots from Hunt, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu wizard let everyone else know – including his next opponent, Cain Velasquez – that he isn’t just a ground fighter.
When we finally get to see Werdum-Velasquez, it will be to crown an undisputed champion. And there will be no doubt that man is the best heavyweight in the game today.
