The MMA Word mixed martial arts podcast is back after a taking a few weeks off, and we have a busy show this week. After a somewhat uneventful UFC Fight Night 36, which turned in a record-tying 10 decisions, we now look ahead to UFC 170, headlined by Ronda Rousey vs Sara McMann. On this week’s show I give my thoughts on some of the fights from Fight Night in Jaragua, and my picks for UFC 170. We’ve also got two guests on the show this week, as Bellator 110 fighters Matt Bessette and Pat Schultz stop by to talk about their upcoming fights. Here’s a breakdown of this week’s episode:
–UFC Fight Night 36 is over, and that is a good thing. Machida & Mousasi put on a great fight in the main event, but it would have had to have been Jones/Gustafsson on TRT to make up for the rest of the card. Are 10 decision cards becoming a new normal in the UFC? I sure hope not, and on this week’s show I give my thoughts on the recent expansion of the UFC roster and number of events, and how it may be impacting the quality of performances we’ve been seeing in the Octagon. There were a few bright spots on UFC Fight Night though, like Erick Silva’s 51 second destruction of Takanori Sato. I recap the notable performances and give my take on where some of the nights winner’s may go from here.
–Longtime MMA veteran and TUF 7 cast member Pat Schultz joins us this week to talk about his upcoming retirement fight against Dave Roberts at Bellator 110. Pat gives some insight on being in The Ultimate Fighter house, his training & team at his gym, Cape Cod Fighting Alliance, and what his post-fight career plans are.
–Another fighter who will step in the cage on February 28th is Matt Bessette, who takes on Diego Nunes in the opening round of the Bellator Season 10 featherweight tournament. Matt fills us in on his training at Underdog BJJ & Fighting Arts Academy, and his thoughts on this season’s featherweight tournament.
–The big news heading into UFC 170 is the short notice opportunity given to Pat Cummins, a 4-0 prospect who steps in for Rashad Evans against Daniel Cormier in the co-main event. I give my thoughts on the matchups on the main card, and some predictions.
