After a lackluster opening five minutes, Thales Leites came right out in the second round and landed a right-hand that hurt Francis Carmont at UFC Fight Night 49.
With Carmont almost out on his feet, the former contender continued to fire off lefts and rights, finishing Carmont and earning his seventh straight win overall and fourth straight since returning to the UFC.
“My boxing coach just kept telling me to go for it,” he said. “Don’t stop, go forward. I put my mind at going forward.”
Back in 2009, Leites (24-4) worked his way to a championship match with Anderson Silva for the middleweight title. He lost via decision, dropped another decision to Alessio Sakara and was released. After going 6-1 on the regional circuit, Leites earned his way back.
He’s now defeated Tom Watson and Ed Herman via decision, with finishes over Trevor Smith and now Carmont.
