Dominick Cruz is rehabilitating his torn ACL for two years now, and the UFC wants him back inside the Octagon during the earlier half of 2014. Fellow bantamweight T.J. Dillashaw thinks when Cruz does return, taking on interim champ Renan Barao right away might be the wrong course of action.
“It almost would help him out because coming back from that long of a layoff, he’s got to fight Renan Barao, one of the top guys in our weight class,” said Dillashaw on MMA Junkie Radio. “That’s a tough fight to come back to off a two-year layoff. It would be nice for him to get a warm-up fight or something in his case.”
Since 2010, Cruz has held either the WEC or UFC bantamweight title. Barao has defended the interim title twice while Cruz is away.
There’s nothing confirmed in regards to an exact return date for Cruz.
Dillashaw will look for his fifth straight UFC win in a week. He takes on Raphael Assunçao at UFC Fight Night 29. It’s October 9 from Brazil’s Ginasio Jose Correa.
