Stephen Thompson put a cap on International Fight Week as only “Wonderboy” could, finishing Jake Ellenberger with a knockout in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale Sunday night.
The win was the fifth in a row for Thompson, who listened to his father, Ray, when it came to the finish.
“My head coach, my father, told me to spin,” he said. “It landed and he said to spin again and I did.”
Thompson (11-1) landed 29 total strikes to just 14 by Ellenberger, including a takedown against the former college wrestler. Thompson was an unbeaten kickboxer and five-time world champion. The 32-year-old has now scored four knockout wins in his seven UFC fights, posting a 6-1 record overall.
“It was my first main event and I came out to put on a show,” he said. “I want to do it again.”
Thompson admitted that Ellenberger (30-10) hurt him with a shot that knocked him down early in the first, but he said he was “still coherent and didn’t give up.”
