Stephen Thompson put his excellent striking skills back on display for the MMA world Saturday night, finishing Robert Whittaker to kick-start UFC 170.
Thompson, a well-decorated kickboxer, connected with a right that dropped the former Ultimate Fighter winner. He was careful not to get too overconfident, before sensing a finish was there.
“When I knew he wasn’t getting back up, I went in to finish him from there,” said Thompson, who is now 4-1 in his Octagon career. “I am getting more and more comfortable with this. I am a striker, that is who I am.”
Thompson (9-1) stopped Chris Clements last year after scoring a decision vs. Nah-Shon Burrell. He has won three straight since a 2012 decision loss to contender Matt Brown.
“I wouldn’t say I’m the best MMA fighter, but I’m working on it,” he said. “I’m getting better and you will see me back in here very soon.”
