For the second straight time inside the Octagon, Steven Ray earned a finish, stopping Leonardo Mafra at UFC Fight Night 72 Saturday.
This one, though, was a memorable one, as Ray was competing in front of his friends and family in Scotland. This was the first UFC event to be held in the country, and the Scottish fans made sure to embrace Ray (17-5).
“The right hand caught him,” Ray said. “This just feels surreal.”
With the win, Ray picked up his 14th career finish, including his sixth via knockout. In April, he made his UFC debut on short notice, stopping Marcin Bandel.
Ray stated that he suffered a motorcycle accident after returning home to finish his training, which kept him on the sidelines for a few weeks.
“I was worried,” he said. “I couldn’t even get warmed up right. I’m just glad it’s over and done with.”
