Ryan LaFlare entered Saturday night’s main event fight vs. Demian Maia with the chance to make a name for himself.
Instead, LaFlare was dealt his first career loss via decision to the former No. 1 contender.
“I underestimated how strong he’d be on top,” LaFlare said. “He taught me a valuable lesson.”
LaFlare (11-1) was unable to get much going with his offense until the fifth when Maia was tired, but he admitted it was “too little, too late.”
“I tried to get him tired,” he said. “Demian is extremely good on the ground and I couldn’t get it going.”
Previously, LaFlare had picked up Octagon victories over John Howard, Court McGee, Santiago Ponzinibbio and Ben Alloway – all via decision.
