Ryan Benoit accepted a fight on just 10 days notice so that he could get back inside the Octagon at UFC 201.
Benoit overcame the wrestling skills of Fredy Serrano, handing the former Olympic athlete his first pro loss via split decision. The win was the second for Benoit (9-4) with the UFC.
After taking the bout on short notice as a replacement for Ray Borg, the 26-year-old admitted that he was not in perfect shape.”
“I was gassed out from the second the bell rang,” Benoit said. “I had to dig deep. I got up off the couch for this fight.”
Serrano, who had won his first two UFC fights via finish, was unable to capitalize on the five takedowns he scored.
“He hit with some goofy kicks, some stuff that nobody has ever thrown at me before,” Benoit said.
