With UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman facing Vitor Belfort at UFC 184, officials have added two more top contenders in the division.
Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza will face Yoel Romero at the February 28 card from Los Angeles, according to a report by the Los Angeles Daily News. The event takes place inside the Staples Center.
Souza (21-3) is viewed as the next contender following his decision victory over Gegard Mousasi, but he has elected to stay busy while waiting to fight for the title. Souza has won seven straight since a 2011 loss to Luke Rockhold for the Strikeforce title.
During his current run, the Brazilian has finished the likes of Yushin Okami, Chris Camozzi and Ed Herman, while also scoring a decision victory vs. Francis Carmont.
Romero (9-1) is coming off a third round finish of Tim Kennedy that marked his fourth straight win. Romero has won five in a row overall, including four finishes vs. Kennedy, Derek Brunson, Ronny Markes and Clifford Starks.
He won silver at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics representing Cuba in freestyle wrestling.
