Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza On Getting Title Shot: Up To UFC

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza scored a huge win this past Friday night when he finished Gegard Mousasi in the main event of UFC Fight Night 50.

While the middleweight title is currently set to be defended by Chris Weidman against Vitor Belfort later this year, most believe Souza did more than enough to fight the winner.

But did he? UFC president Dana White played coy when asked about Jacare being viewed as the No. 1 contender, something the fighter himself didn’t want to declare either.

“I work for the UFC,” Souza said, during the post-fight press conference. “Whatever they want (I’ll do).

“I think I deserve the title shot, but we’ll see.”

Souza (21-3) earned his fourth straight win inside the Octagon and his seventh in a row overall dating to his days in Strikeforce. He has finished Mousasi, Chris Camozzi, Ed Herman, Derek Brunson and Bristol Marunde since a loss to Luke Rockhold in 2011.

When asked about competing for the UFC title, Souza didn’t know yet what his game plan would be, but promised to “take that belt.”

“I was very well trained (for fighting Mousasi),” he said. “My takedowns were on point.

“Surely this puts me in line for a title shot and I want to fight the champion.”
