Former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza remained perfect inside the Octagon Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 36, but wasn’t able to get the finish he so desperately wanted.
Souza earned his sixth consecutive victory, handing Francis Carmont his first UFC loss in the process.
After admitting he battled a pre-fight arm injury, Souza made it clear he wants one thing next.
“I want the champion, whoever has the belt,” Souza said. “If the UFC doesn’t feel I’m ready for that, give me whoever will get me closer.”
Souza (20-3) had several choke attempts nearly locked in, stating he thought “three times I was really close (to finishing).
“He is a tough fighter,” Souza said of Carmont. “It was a tough fight. He is very good. I was trying to take him down, but he defended very well. I really wanted to end it.”
The loss snapped an 11-fight win streak for Carmont, dropping him to 22-8.
