Featherweight champion Jose Aldo has stated Ricardo Lamas is one of the top contenders to his belt. When Lamas looks around, he’s one of the few featherweights who is yet to challenge Aldo for the belt.
“Out of the top contenders in our weight class, I’m the only one who hasn’t had the chance to fight Jose Aldo,” said Lamas to Sherdog. “Chad Mendes had his chance. Cub Swanson had his chance back in the WEC, so it makes sense. We need to get some fresh blood in here.”
Mendes was stopped by Aldo with one second on the clock in round one and Swanson was dropped in seconds. Since none of those fights were close, Lamas feels it’s his turn.
Lamas has won four in a row since cutting to featherweight. He’s finished three of those recent fights.
Aldo is currently out until next year and Lamas said he’s willing to wait since title shots don’t come around too often. The UFC hasn’t committed on a No. 1 contender.
