According to Jason Coles, Phil Davis is closing in on a contract with Bellator MMA.
Davis, who won the 197-pound NCAA Div. I wrestling champion in 2008 with Penn State University, completed his UFC contract this past January with a split decision loss to Ryan Bader.
After winning 12 of his first 14, including a no-contest, “Mr. Wonderful” has gone just 1-2 in his last three. That includes a decision loss to current No. 1 contender Anthony Johnson.
Davis opened his MMA career with nine straight wins, scoring victories over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Tim Boetsch, Brian Stann and former title contender Alexander Gustafsson. He was rewarded with a 2012 fight vs. ex-champion Rashad Evans, which he lost via decision.
