Renan Barao has no problem waiting a little longer if it gets him a title unification bout against bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. For the past year, Barao has been the interim title holder.
“Since we’re waiting all this time, I can wait a little longer till February when he gets back,” said Barao on MMA Junkie Radio. “Then I can legitimately get the belt.”
Cruz hasn’t fought since October 2011 and has been out with an ACL injury. His surgery didn’t take and a second one was required. The UFC has been looking for him to return during the first half of 2014.
Barao became the first UFC fighter to defend an interim title twice, finishing Eddie Wineland early in round two of UFC 165.
