There’s lots of uncertainty in the UFC bantamweight division and it all circles around Dominick Cruz. He is the current champ, but has been out with an ACL injury for over two years now. Renan Barao was named the interim champ and has defended the belt twice.
The UFC hopes Cruz returns in early 2014 or they may have to strip him of the belt. If Cruz can’t fight, it only makes sense to Raphael Assuncao that he gets the next crack at the gold.
“I’ll wait and see what happens,” said Assuncao. “Barao deserves to fight Dominick Cruz to settle this. There’s another semifinal between Urijah Faber and Michael McDonald to happen. I don’t know what happens next, but I have done enough.”
Barao has already defeated Faber and McDonald to retain the interim title.
Assuncao is 5-0 as a bantamweight. He last took Fight of the Night against T.J. Dillashaw in a split-decision at UFC Fight Night 29.
