Phil Davis Ahead Of UFC 172: “I Have The Killer Instinct”

ufc 179

Phil Davis has been itching to get back inside the Octagon after seeing his four-fight unbeaten streak come to an end at the hands of Anthony Johnson earlier this year.

Tonight, Davis steps into enemy territory when he faces Glover Teixeira at UFC 179 from Brazil. “Mr. Wonderful” knows that he needs to avoid the same pitfalls that left him on the wrong end of a decision to Johnson.

And that all starts with keeping Teixeira backing up.

“The keys are striking first and striking often – keeping him on his heels,” he said, during an interview on UFC Tonight earlier this week. “Once he gets going, he’s like a Sherman tank, keeps moving forward and has a tight boxing stance.”

Davis (12-2) appeared set to become a contender to the light heavyweight title before running into “Rumble” in April. He had won three straight, including a 2013 decision over former UFC champion Lyoto Machida in Brazil.

Despite all that, many question Davis. He hasn’t finished a fight since 2012 when he submitted Wagner Prado, and his last knockout stoppage came in 2009 – before signing with the UFC.

“I have the killer instinct. I have the ability to finish guys,” he said. “I’ve done it before. Whatever it takes, I’ve got it.”

We’ll have complete coverage of Davis-Teixeira, along with the rest of the card, tonight on FightLine.
