Paul Buentello On Reason For Dropping To Light Heavyweight After 15 Years

Paul Buentello is no stranger to MMA, having been in the sport for 15 years with 48 fights to match. All of those fights took place as heavyweight, with the exception of the most recent one. Legacy FC 22 saw Buentello win in his light heavyweight debut.

“It was always in the back in my head to go to 205,” said Buentello to MMA Weekly. “[Trainer] Brad Barnes and I were talking about it, kicking it around last year, and finally he called me and asked me if I wanted to do it or if I was just going to keep fighting at heavyweight and wait for someone to call me.”

Buentello was able to shake off several rear naked choke attempts by James McSweeney in the opening round. He finished the fight with a body shot halfway through round number two.

The win makes Buentello 33-15 and was his fourth straight win in two years. McSweeney is 1-2 in recent outings.

They were the main event of Legacy FC 22, which was August 23 from Lubbock, TX.
