The ONE welterweight title was not on the line Friday at ONE Championship: Global Rivals as originally planned after Nikolay Aleksakhin failed to make weight.
Instead, Aleksakhin squared off with titleholder Ben Askren in the main event from the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines.
The unbeaten Askren remained that way, earning a decision. It was the first time since 2012 that he went all 25 minutes.
“I am ready for whoever the promotion throws to me,” he said. “I just wanna scrap.”
It was all Askren through the first two rounds, as the former Olympic wrestler controlled the action on the ground. After Aleksakhin found a home for his jab, he started to find some momentum before “Funky” quickly brought things back to the canvas.
Former champion Honorio Banario picked up a decision, while Reece McLaren topped the previously unbeaten Muin Gafurov. Lowen Tynanes upset former ONE champion Koji Ando and Geje Eustaquio earned a decision over Gianni Subba in the co-main event.
Martin Nguyen, Joshua Pacio, April Osenio, Sunoto and Danny Kingad all scored stoppage victories.
