Ben Askren’s reign atop the ONE welterweight division survived another challenge, but it was under a cloud of controversy.
Askren and Luis Santos fought to a no-contest Friday in the main event of ONE: Valor of Champions from the Philippines. The reigning titleholder remained with the belt after an accidental eye-poke left Santos unable to continue.
Following the eye-poke, the bout was waved off, only to have it resumed and Santos given time to recover. He was allowed more than the five-minute rest period previously given, but eventually his corner decided he would not continue fighting.
Askren called it “embarrassing” and asked to have a rematch set as soon as possible. He also stated that Santos “comes out early and he looks for a way out” during the post-fight interview.
In other action, Mark Striegl earned a victory over Casey Suire much to the delight of the Filipino fan base, locking up a rear-naked choke in just under four minutes in the co-main event.
Anatpong Bunrad, Eugene Toquero, Edward Kelly, Amir Khan, Xiaoyang Lui and Wang Ya Wei were all winners on the night.
