It is being reported that Japanese superstar Takanori Gomi is in the final stages of negotiations that would have the lightweight taking on Brett Cooper at “Affliction: Trilogy” on August 1st.
MMAWeekly.com confirmed with sources close to the situation that both fighters have agreed to a 165-pound scrap, however they are still ironing out the financial numbers.
Gomi, who was once the world’s most dominating lightweight fighter, has dropped two of his last three fights. He was finally able to get off the snide against Takashi Nakakura at “Shooto: Tradition Final” this past May.
His career appeared to spiral downward after Nick Diaz dominated him throughout their Pride FC bout in 2007. Although Diaz subbed his with a nasty gogoplata in the second roung, Gomi was let off the hook with a 'No Contest' ruling after Diaz subsequently tested positive for marijuana.
Cooper disposed of Patrick Speight on Affliction’s second ever MMA event, “Day of Reckoning,” earlier this year. He holds a 9-4 overall record.
Thus far, here are the fighters rumored to be fighting inside the Honda Center in Anaheim, California:
Deividas Taurosevicius vs. TBD Mark Hominick vs. TBD Jay Hieron vs. Paul Daley Ben Rothwell vs. Chase Gormley Brett Cooper vs. Takanori Gomi Vitor Belfort vs Jorge Santiago Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Gegard Mousassi Paul Buentello vs. Tim Sylvia Josh Barnett vs. Fedor Emelianenko (WAMMA Heavyweight Champion)
