UFC 98 Predictions From Fightline's Mike CalimbasThe UFC 98 is very intriguing to me for a number of reasons. For one, the main event of the evening features undefeated fighters Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida versus Rashad “Sugar” Evans in what is very much a pick-em matchup. The card also features Matt Hughes versus Matt “The Terra” Serra in a grudge match to settle their score from their coaching appearance on The Ultimate Fighter. The card is two days away and debate has been hot and heavy on who will win these matches plus more. See below for my predictions.

Main Event: Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship
This bout has shaped up to be one of the toughest to predict in a very long time. For one, like I said, both fighters are undefeated. Both fighters have notable victories. Machida has beaten the likes of B.J. Penn, Thiago Silva, and Tito Ortiz. Meanwhile, Evans is no slouch himself, having beaten Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell, and Michael Bisping en route to the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

My Prediction: Rashad Evans will attempt to counter-fight against Machida . The only problem is that you cannot counter what has already been countered. Lyoto will remain his elusive self and make it impossible for Rashad to catch him. He will frustrate and confuse the champion with his darting straight punches and takedown defense en route to a five-round decision victory.

Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra
This one has been broiling for a long time with both fighters clearly and genuinely not liking each other. The seasoned Hughes, at 43-7, is a welterweight legend. The BJJ Black Belt in Matt Serra (13-7) has also been around for a long while despite not having as many fights. This match may be a retirement match for whoever loses and bragging rights for the eventual winner.

My Prediction: Matt Hughes is the betting favorite going into this one. The word from people close to his camp say that the “old” Hughes is back and will look to dominate this bout with his vaunted GNP. But how many times have we heard about fighters bringing their “old” self back? Many, many times. In this fight, I predict that we will see a past-his-prime Matt Hughes trying very hard to get the victory. Despite his efforts, I see Serra knocking him out in third round.

Drew McFedries vs. Xavier Foupa-Pokam
Foupa-Pokam is coming off a loss against Dennis Kang just last month, Meanwhile, “Massacre” McFedries is coming off two losses himself to Thales Laetes and Mike Mazzenzio. Uh oh. I sense this will be yet another of Dana White’s loser-leaves-town matches.
