Micah Miller steps into the cage tomorrow night at WEC 35 in Las Vegas against Josh Grispi in a match that will definitely put the winner in the top of the heap in Urijah Faber's featherweight division.
Miller, the 21 year-old younger brother of UFC standout Cole Miller, trains at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, FL, and has also enlisted the help of Juan Carlos Santana and his Institute of Human Performance.
He brings an impressive record of 9-2 into the fight against the Massachusetts native Josh Grispi, who is trained by South Shore Sport Fighting in Rockland, MA.
I caught up with Micah recently and talked to him about his training camp, social life, and future in the sport. These are some of the things he had to say:
On his training camp-
"Training camp went great, it was probably the toughest training camp I have ever done physically. For my skills, I mostly stayed over at ATT but for my strength and conditioning, I hooked up with Juan Carlos Santana at IHP and they put me through grueling workouts. I’ve never punished myself like I punished myself throughout this training camp.
On Cutting Weight-
"I don’t cut as much as some people probably think. The last time in Albuquerque they said I had missed weight but they had told the first six fighters that they over, the athletic commission didn’t know how to read the scales. The only time I really had trouble making weight was that fight with Cub Swanson. Making weight is not really that hard though, I’ve got it down pretty good now. Systematically where I’m at now is where I need to be and everything is going as planned so far."
On the days leading up to a fight-
"I just bring some friends and training partners in, I don’t bring my coaches out. I’ll have my brother Cole, and our friend Blake Bowman who you saw on “TUF” season 6, and Yves Edwards will be coming out here tomorrow so we got a really good group of friends and training partners out here to corner me on Sunday. Really its all about making weight, I try to relax and recover from the weeks before, we do a little drilling, mitt work, punch the Thai pads, I don’t really hit the bag or anything, I’ll still roll a little bit but I’ll roll light , I try to break a sweat more than anything."
On what he knows about Josh Grispi-
"Not much really, I know he’s 19 years old and he’s pretty tall for the weight like myself. I don’t know where he trains but I know that all his fights have ended in the 1st round, and I know he’s got a lot of submission wins but that’s about it."
