The Harris County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that Sam Vasquez died from a severe brain injury sustained in an officially sanctioned MMA contest on November 30, making him the first fighter in the history of the sport to pay the ultimate price.

The 35-year-old Vasquez was knocked out by Vince Libardi in the third round of their bout which took place on October 20 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Tx.

Vasquez suffered a subsequent stroke while hospitalized and underwent two surgeries to remove blood clots that formed in his brain. He eventually passed away on November 30.
