ESPN confirms that regulating body is investigating Petruzelli vs. Slice fight
By Tim Ngo | October 10, 2008
Franklin McNeil from ESPN.com was able to get in touch with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation who told McNeil that although it, “doesn't have any reason to believe there was a problem with the Slice-Petruzelli fight, given the interest in it, the Department has begun a preliminary investigation to thoroughly review the circumstances of the fight.”From prior experience into most investigations, there’s obviously a reason why they are investigating otherwise they wouldn’t waste their resources is something that isn’t a problem.
All of this stems from Seth Petruzelli’s comments the day following the biggest win in his career, but the biggest loss for EliteXC. “The promoters kind of hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him. They didn’t want me to take him down, let’s just put it that way,” Petruzelli told the Monsters in the Morning Show in Orlando.
Former EliteXC President, Gary Shaw, told the Los Angeles Times the next day that it was common for him to, “go to a fighter and say, 'We're looking for a stand-up fight.' You're not asking him to throw a fight. You're talking about a fan-friendly fight, not about protecting Kimbo.”
Whatever the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation is going to find will change the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. If ProElite is found guilty, everyone will think the fix is in for the entire sport. If they are found innocent, people will still think that the fix was in but that they covered it up somehow. It’s a lose/lose situation for ProElite and MMA.
