The UFC’s three-week break is nearly over, and The MMA Word Podcast is back on Fightline.com to help you get up to speed on what you may have missed. Between Chris Weidman’s heroic life-saving efforts last week, and Fabricio Werdum narrowly escaping carbon monoxide poisoning in Mexico while training for his UFC 180 fight with Cain Velasquez, there is no shortage of things to talk about. The rematch between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes will finally take place this weekend at UFC 179, and an interesting light heavyweight fight between Glover Teixeira and Phil Davis co-headlines the card. On this episode, I’ll give my predictions for UFC 179’s main card, as well as discuss the topics that made the headlines around the MMA blogs this week.
Here’s what we’ve got lined up for this week’s episode:
–Weidman The Life-Saver: Chris Weidman came to the rescue of his 94-year-old neighbor last week. He told his story to MMAFighting.com, and I will recap and discuss the heroic deed performed by the UFC middleweight champion.
–GSP Gets Cleared To Train: UFC President Dana White met with Georges St. Pierre last week after the former UFC welterweight champion was cleared by his doctor to resume training after a torn ACL injury. GSP is currently on a hiatus/retirement from mixed martial arts. Does this mean St. Pierre will fight again? And if so, how soon? I give my take on whether or not we’ll see GSP inside the Octagon any time soon.
–Fights! Announced This Week: Urijah Faber and Renan Barao both received fight bookings over the past week. Thiago Alves and Jordan Mein have been paired up, as well as some interesting fights in the men’s flyweight and women’s strawweight divisions.
–UFC 179: How Did We Get Here? Preview: The ‘How Did We Get Here Preview’ makes its MMA Word debut on this week’s show, where I will preview the main card of UFC 179 while asking how we got to this point in mixed martial arts. A bit of featherweight title history and backstory on how we arrived at Aldo vs. Mendes 2.
