UFC 178 is in the books and the show left us with a whole lot of stuff to discuss. Demetrious Johnson’s successful defense of the UFC flyweight title, the returns of Dominick Cruz and Cat Zingano, and the first round TKO win for the UFC’s newest superstar Conor McGregor were the highlights from one of the biggest shows of 2014. We also had a few great fights get announced this week, including Frankie Edgar vs. Cub Swanson and Bobby Green vs. Edson Barboza. It’s been another busy week in mixed martial arts, and The MMA Word Podcast is back with another episode on Fightline.com to guide you through this hectic week in MMA.
Here’s a break down of this week’s episode:
UFC 178 Recap: “Mighty Mouse” defended his title again, but with such a stacked card, the flyweight championship fight seemed like a bit of an afterthought. Conor McGregor notched his biggest victory to-date when he TKOed Dustin Poirier in the first round of their main card matchup, and Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone made his claim for a lightweight title shot with his hard-fought victory over Eddie Alvarez. I recap all the action coming out of UFC 178, including #stoolgate, Dominick Cruz’s return to dominance, and where everyone goes from here.
The Monthy NSAC Hearing: The monthly Nevada Athletic Commission hearing was streamed on UFC Fight Pass again this month, and we got to re-live the Jones/Cormier brawl with both fighters giving their side of the story to the commission. Floyd Mayweather also had to appear before the commission for his actions on Showtime All Access in the lead-up to his recent fight. I give my thoughts on the dealings of the NSAC, Floyd’s excuses, and the Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier fight.
Wanderlei Silva Gets Lifetime Ban from NSAC: The heaviest of all the punishments given out by the Nevada Athletic Commission was the indefinite suspension to Wanderlei Silva for running from a drug test earlier this year. I give my thoughts on the punishment, where or not it was too harsh, and whether or not Wanderlei Silva should be allowed in the UFC Hall of Fame.
Fights Announced This Week: Nate Diaz returns against Rafael dos Anjos for UFC on Fox 13, Bobby Green gets Edson Barboza and Cub Swanson vs Frankie Edgar will main event a Fight Night in Austin, Texas. I break down some of the biggest fights announced over the past week.
