A rare off-week for the UFC has given us a much needed break from the blistering schedule of mixed martial arts events that we have been trying to keep up with since the start of 2014. It was a very newsworthy week for women’s MMA, as Holly Holm signed with UFC, Cat Zingano’s return was set, and Invicta FC announced their debut on UFC Fight Pass set for September 6th. With the cancellation of UFC 176, lots of fights scheduled for that event got moved to other events, most notably the Gegard Mousasi vs “Jacare” Souza fight was re-booked as the headliner for UFC Fight Night 50 at Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut. We’ve also got two UFC events coming up this week, so here’s what we have lined up for episode #38 of the podcast:
–UFC 176 Cancellation: With no viable headliner available, UFC 176 has been cancelled. This is the second event in two years that the UFC has had to nix. Is the UFC’s increased event schedule to blame for the cancellation? I give my thoughts on the card getting cancelled and discuss the reshuffling of the fights booked for that event.
-Fight Night 50 News: Along with the main event of Gegard Mousasi vs Ronaldo Souza, UFC Fight Night 50 on September 5th added Overeem vs Rothwell, Mitrione vs Lewis, Font vs Beal, and Camozzi vs Natal. I give my thoughts on how the card is shaping up thus far and how Bellator is booking their event for the same night.
-Invicta FC on Fight Pass: We learned this week that Invicta FC 8 is booked for September 6th on UFC Fight Pass. The card will feature two title fights and the first ever lightweight fight under the Invicta banner. I break down the card thus far and what Invicta on Fight Pass means for Invicta and Fight Pass.
–Other WMMA News: Cat Zingano vs Amanda Nunes booked for UFC 178, Holly Holm signs with the UFC, and Cyborg will be making her bantamweight debut in December. The women’s bantamweight division is heating up and I share my thoughts on what the future might hold for the champ Ronda Rousey.
–Fight Night 45 Predictions: We close out the show with my predictions for this Wednesday’s UFC card from Atlantic City, featuring a fantastic lightweight matchup between Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller.
