The MMA Word is a weekly video podcast, where host Michael Wellman offers up his views and opinions on the latest headlines in mixed martial arts, as well as interviews with fighters and prominent figures from around the world of combat sports. For Episode #33, Mike is joined by retired UFC fighter and commentator Kenny Florian to discuss the upcoming UFC Fight Night.
Even though there was no UFC this weekend, it wasn’t a quiet weekend by any means. Floyd Mayweather won a fight that was actually competitive. Joe Warren became Bellator’s first ever two-division champion when he beat Raphael Silva to become Bellator’s interim bantamweight champion. Former UFC heavyweight Pat Barry made his Glory kickboxing debut on Saturday night in Denver, and got knocked out cold by Zack Mwekassa. Aside from the fights, there was also a plethora of big fights announced this week. Here’s what we’ve got lined up this week.
–Gloves: Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told the media this week that the UFC can use Bellator’s new glove design, because it has brought down hand injuries ‘exponentially’. Will the UFC give credit to Bellator for advancing mma with a safer, more effective piece of equiptment? Doubtful. I share my thoughts on the state of equiptment in mma, including the new glove design.
–MMA Headlines: Aldo vs Mendes in LA for UFC 176, Miller vs Cerrone in Atlantic City, Teixeira suffered a torn labrum in his fight with Jones, and Melvin Guillard’s WSOF debut is set. All that and more in this week’s news roundup.
–Fight Night 40 Preview with Kenny Florian: UFC commentator Kenny Florian joins us this week to break down UFC Fight Night 40, headlined by Matt Brown vs Erick Silva.
