The MMA Word Podcast Episode #28 w/ John Howard, Matt Bessette, Fight Night 38 Recap

The MMA Word is a weekly video podcast, where host Michael Wellman offers up his views and opinions on the latest headlines in mixed martial arts, as well as interviews with fighters and prominent figures from around the world of combat sports.  For Episode #28, for 3/24/14, Mike is joined by UFC welterweight John “Doomsday” Howard, and Bellator Season 10 tournament semi-finalist Matt Bessette.

UFC Fight Night 38 is in the books, and I have finally found the clarity with which to call it #38.  You see, when we number these Fight Nights, (spoiler alert) we exclude the TUF China Finale!  Every other ‘Fight Night’ that was numbered and featured a finale fight for an international season of The Ultimate Fighter was worthy of being a numbered Fight Night, while the Kim vs. Hathaway falls under the ‘TUF Finale’ category.  None of that has anything to do with this show, so here’s what is in store for you this week:

–UFC Fight Night 38* Recap:  Dan Henderson silenced the Natal, Brazil crowd with a thunderous right hand to Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua that broke the Pride legend’s nose, and a few more big punches from
Hendo finished Shogun in the third round of their main event fight.  More notable bad referee calls than we’ve been seeing lately at Fight Night 38, I go over all those and the rest of the action from the UFC’s latest trip to Brazil.

–John Howard:  John “Doomsday” Howard joins us this week, as he prepares for the 15-hour flight to Abu Dhabi in a few weeks to face Ryan LaFlare at the next UFC Fight Night card.  We discuss his recent induction into the CES MMA Hall-of-Fame, as well as his upcoming fight.

–MMA Headlines:  Pat Barry’s Glory debut is set, Hendricks tore his bicep, Condit tore his ACL, Cub Swanson and Jeremy Stephens are going to fight, and the UFC released Guillard and Menjivar.  All that and more.

–Matt Bessette:  “The Mangler” is back on the show to talk about his recent victory over Diego Nunes, as well as his fight this Friday at Bellator 114, in the semi-finals of the season 10 featherweight tournament against Daniel Weichel.
