First off Intense Debate is back by popular demand so enjoy!
My pick for Fighter of the Year came down to 5 choices; Anthony Pettis, Cain Velasquez, Hiroyuki Takaya, Frankie Edgar and Hatsu Hioki. It’s really incredible how Hiroyuki Takaya has resurrected a career that up until May of last year was somewhat dare I say “mixed”.
On May 5th, 2010 he did something that no one had ever been able to do in the span of 10 years, he stepped into the white cage and he stopped the iron- chinned viking Joachim Hansen. When I say “stopped” I really mean knocked out so bad that Hansen’s glare broke the space time continuum as you’ll see in the video evidence below.
Next up on September 25th was a matchup with WEC veteran Chase Beebe at DREAM 16. Takaya once again showed his much improved counter punching skills in landing my favorite punch in all of MMA, the perfectly timed counter left hook.
Finally, Takaya got his chance at revenge when he took on the highly touted Bibiano Fernandes for the second time for the Featherweight Belt at K-1 Dynamite!! Takaya showed incredibly improved takedown defense and steady ground and pound on his way to a unanimous decision victory.
Takaya gets the nod from me as he seemingly came out of virtual obscurity to win 3 times in impressive fashion culminating in a championship belt. MMA Scraps salutes “The Streetfight Bancho”.
