UFC fighter Cub Swanson tweeted his support for Michael Sam, the former college football All-American, who announced on Sunday that he is gay.
Sam, who starred at Missouri and was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year this past season, made the announcement just a few weeks before the NFL Draft. Sam was expected to be selected during the middle rounds of the draft.
“I respect a man who shows true courage,” Swanson posted on Twitter. “Michael Sam way to stand up and be proud of who you are.”
Sam told his Tiger teammates before the season of his sexuality. He competed in the Senior Bowl two weeks ago.
Liz Carmouche, who became the first openly gay fighter to compete in the UFC when she debuted vs. Ronda Rousey last year, also stated her pleasure in hearing the news.
I respect a man who shows true courage! Michael Sam way to stand up and be proud of who you are
