Michael Chandler Vs. Patricky “Pitbull” Freire For Vacant Bellator Title

After releasing Will Brooks Saturday – leaving the Bellator lightweight title vacant – officials announced during Bellator 154 that Michael Chandler will meet Patricky “Pitbull” Freire.

Chandler is a former champion who dropped the title to Eddie Alvarez in 2013 and lost back-to-back fights to Brooks for the interim and vacant belts in 2014.

Since, Chandler (14-3) has rebounded with stoppages vs. David Rickels and Derek Campos.

Back in 2011, Chandler scored a decsion over Freire in the tournament final on his way to defeating Alvarez for the belt later that year.

Freire (16-7) has won back-to-back fights since a split decision loss to Derek Anderson, defeating Kevin Souza and Ryan Couture. He is 6-2 over his last eight.

Bellator 157 takes place June 24 from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The card, “Dynamite 2,” will feature Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Satoshii Ishii and the promotional debut of Matt Mitrione.
