It didn’t happen how he envisioned, but Max Holloway earned his seventh consecutive victory Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 74.
Holloway and Charles Oliveira were set for five rounds, but the Brazilian suffered an injury after attempting a takedown early in the bout. The referee stepped in and stopped it, as Oliveira took several minutes of medical attention to get back to his feet.
“Everybody, send prayers to Charles,” he said. “This is part of the game. It is sad to see it happen, as this is how we make a living.
“All prayers to Charles for a full recovery.”
Holloway (14-3) earned his seventh straight win since a loss to Conor McGregor, and made a push for another headline bout in 2016.
“UFC Hawaii, Max Holloway-Frankie Edgar,” Holloway said. “People keep saying this fight (vs. Oliveira) might be a title contention (bout), but one guy deserves (the next title fight); Frankie Edgar.”
McGregor and Jose Aldo will meet this December to unify the titles, and Edgar was recently called out – and accepted – by Jeremy Stephens.
For Oliveira, the loss snapped a four-fight win streak for him.
