Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida did more than enough to earn a decision victory over Gegard Mousasi Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 36
“The Dragon” took advantage of his speed edge, earning the victory on all three scorecards.
With the win, Machida (21-4) improved to 2-0 at middleweight and 4-1 overall in his last five fights. So, does he think he should get the winner of UFC champion Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort next?
“I obviously would like to get the chance, but it is up to the UFC to decide who I’m going to get next,” Machida said.
Mousasi, a former Strikeforce champion, never threatened Machida, but he did survive several powerful head kicks.
“He’s a great fighter, a real champion,” said Machida, of Mousasi. “I wanted to finish it in a different way but I couldn’t.”
The fight was the first for Mousasi since a win 10 months ago in his UFC debut.
