Kelvin Gastelum Has Some Work To Do Before Welterweight Return

Kelvin Gastelum wants to return to the welterweight division despite being a former Ultimate Fighter winner at 185 pounds.

Following his return win at middleweight over Nate Marquardt this past weekend at UFC 188, Gastelum made a plea to be granted his wish. UFC president Dana White, though, wasn’t having it.

Gastelum failed to make weight on a handful of times while competing at 170 pounds, and even when he did, it was on multiple attempts to weigh-in.

“He made 185 and he looked great at 185,” said White, during the post-fight press conference. “He looked healthy and it did not look like he was going to die at the weigh-ins.”

White said he understands why Gastelum wants to be at 170, but “training and whatever he has been doing is not cutting it.”

Gastelum dominated Marquardt, scoring a convincing win over the former Strikeforce champion and one-time UFC title contender. His lone loss came to top welterweight contender Tyron Woodley.

“I have not done anything to prove (I can make 170),” said Gastelum, when asked to respond to White’s comments. “Actions speak louder than words. He said I need to prove it, so I’m going to prove it.”
