It wasn’t pretty, but former Ultimate Fighter Kelvin Gastelum remained unbeaten Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 44, overcoming a failed weigh-in and slow start to defeat Nico Musoke.
Gastelum, who came in almost two pounds over for the welterweight contest, vowed to get his weight under control moving forward. He also had trouble cutting down to 171 pounds earlier this year.
“I apologize for not making weight,” Gastelum said. “There is no excuse for that. I apologized to the UFC, Joe Silva. I am truly disappointed in that.”
Gastelum, who stunned the world when he went from the last pick to the winner of The Ultimate Fighter with a victory over Uriah Hall, has went the distance in each of his last two UFC appearances. After Musoke controlled the opening five minutes, it was all Gastelum from there.
“I had to pick up the pace over the next two rounds,” he said. “I tried hard for the finish and I hit him with a lot of clean shots but he didn’t go down. He is very tough.”
Gastelum (9-0) will give 20-percent of his fight purse to Musoke (12-3) for the failed weigh-in.
