UFC president Dana White thought the recent Junior dos Santos-Cain Velasquez fight from UFC 166 should have been stopped in the third round. Santos’ jiu-jitsu coach Yuri Carlton said stopping the fight was never an option and the former heavyweight champ agrees.
“I don’t think the fight should have been stopped earlier because Cain and I were both looking for the victory and defending ourselves at the same time to avoid the fight being stopped,” said Santos to MMA Fighting.
Santos agreed with the stoppage in the fifth round. The referee stepped in after Santos had hit his head on the canvas.
It ends their trilogy, with Velasquez capturing the last two fights. The champ is expected to take on Fabricio Werdum next year.
