Andre Pederneiras, the head coach at the Nova Uniao gym that has helped mold the likes of Jose Aldo and Renan Barao, is stepping down from his current position.
Pederneiras told Portal do Vale Tudo recently that he cannot continue on with the amount of fights and fighters training at the Brazilian gym. Instead, he’ll serve in more of a consultant role, allowing for others to lead the fighters.
“I don’t want to be the head coach anymore,” he said. “Some other kids at the gym will take over, each one will take a little group. I’m not saying I won’t travel again, but that will reduce my trips almost to zero.
“(With) so many fighters, there’s no way I can favor some fighters over others, which is what happens now and it’s a bummer.”
Under the watchful eye of Pederneiras, Aldo has claimed the WEC and UFC featherweight titles, and Barao won the UFC bantamweight belt. The gym has also found success in many weight classes and on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.
Pederneiras did say he plans to coach both Aldo and Barao in their upcoming title fights.
