The planned rematch between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes was moved to Brazil to appease television partner Globo, CEO Lorenzo Fertitta told the Los Angeles Times.
Originally, Aldo and Mendes were to fight in Los Angeles this month, but a training injury knocked “Scarface” out. Instead of working to bring another event to L.A., the bout was booked for UFC 179. The co-main event that night features Phil Davis and Glover Teixeira.
“Staples (Center) is at the top of our list,” Fertitta said. “We love being at Staples. It’s a priority for us. We’re going to try and get back at Staples within a year.”
Fertitta added that he tried to place the Anderson Silva-Nick Diaz fight in January in Los Angeles, but the Staples Center is booked the evening of January 31.
