Jon Jones asked for a challenge and Alexander Gustafsson was the toughest one to date for the light heavyweight champion. Jones scored the decision at UFC 165, but said he needed to keep improving.
“I felt my camp was off,” said Jones to MMA Fighting. “I’m not going to make any excuses, Gustafsson showed up, and he did his part, and he fought at a very high level, but you’ve seen me compete better than that. I know I’m better than that.”
The win was the sixth time Jones defended the belt, which is a record. He takes on Glover Teixeira sometime in 2014. The details for that fight are still being worked out.
Gustafsson was told if he has a strong performance against Jimi Manuwa, he will get another title shot. They meet in March 2014 out of England.
