On the horizon of facing Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 this weekend, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was asked about a potential move to the heavyweight ranks while on “UFC Tonight.”
“I think it’s in my near future,” Jones said. “I’m excited about moving up and challenging some of these guys.”
Currently, Cain Velasquez holds the UFC heavyweight title. Both Jones and Velasquez competed at Iowa Central Community College, winning NJCAA national wrestling titles.
“If Cain can do what he’s done, I believe I can do it as well,” he said. “I do things that heavyweights aren’t used to seeing.”
Jones can become the leader atop the 205-pound title defenses chart with a win over Gustafsson Saturday night.
