Johny Hendricks Not Concerned With Extended Layoff

ufc 181

UFC 181 will mark the first title defense for Johny Hendricks, as the welterweight champion meets Robbie Lawler.

He’ll also be competing for the first time since his March decision victory over Lawler that netted him the title.

For Hendricks (16-2), the time off isn’t of concern, though, because it’s something he’s learned to deal with over time.

“I feel being inactive doesn’t bother me,” said Hendricks, during a recent interview with “You have to train hard and learn how to compete with layoffs.”

The former Oklahoma State University two-time NCAA Div. I wrestling national champion is 7-1 in his last eight fights overall, with the lone loss being a split decision defeat to then-titleholder Georges St-Pierre. While his win over Lawler was satisfying, he is hoping to do one better this time around.

“I would like to be able to finish Robbie this time,” Hendricks said. “(The first bout) was a close fight and I was injured a little bit, but I think with this one, (it) is going to be different.”

FightLine will have coverage all week leading up to Saturday’s card, with play-by-play set for the night of the fights.
