A pair of submission wizards will collide in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields next week, as Demian Maia takes on Jake Shields.
Set for Brazil, the bout takes place October 9. UFC announcer Joe Rogan explained his excitement for the bout recently.
“For a grappling fan, this is a real dream matchup,” Rogan said. “Jake Shields is one of the very best American submission Jiu-jitsu fighters and Demian Maia is perhaps the most-decorated Brazilian Jiu-jitsu fighter in MMA today. Both guys started at 185 pounds. Jake Shields was the 185-pound Strikeforce champion. Demian Maia had good success at 185, but at 170 looks nearly unstoppable.”
Maia (18-4) is unbeaten since moving down to welterweight from middleweight, where he was a one-time contender to the title. Shields (28-6-1) has also recently moved back to 170 pounds after giving 185 a try.
