Joanna Jedrzecjzyk started fast, weathered a storm and finished strong at UFC 205 to remain unbeaten and strawweight champion with a decision victory over Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
Jedrzecjzyk (13-0) continued her pursuit of Ronda Rousey’s female title defense record, dominating in the clinch and using her reach to hand Kowalkiewicz her first pro loss in 11 fights. She also bested her on the amateur scene while both were coming up in Poland.
This was the fourth successful title defense for the champion.
“I knew she would be a tough fight,” she said. “She was a very good challenge. I am very happy she and I both joined the UFC.”
The 29-year-old has now bested Kowalkiewicz, Claudia Gadelha, Valerie Letourneau and Jessica Penne since winning the belt in 2015 vs. Carla Esparza.
“Do you know why I stay champion?” she said. “I challenge myself every day. I am very focused and hard on myself.”
