Renan Barao decided bantamweight was no longer for him.
Jeremy Stephens doesn’t think featherweight is the right fit, either.
Stephens earned a decision over the former UFC champion Sunday night at UFC Fight Night 88, denying Barao in his debut at 145 pounds.
“Barao’s a true champion, but I am here to take (the win),” Stephens said. “Hat’s off to him, but I don’t think he should be here at 145 pounds.”
For Stephens (25-12), the win was his 12th inside the Octagon. He is now 5-3 over his last eight, with all three defeats being via decision.
“It feels amazing,” he said. “I am just so happy and blessed.”
Barao, who carried a 32-1 record with one no-contest into a 2014 title defense vs. T.J. Dillashaw, is just 1-3 over his last four.
