Jamie Varner’s management team, Knock Out Representation, updated his status after a loss to James Krause Saturday night at UFC 173.
“2 broken bones in the foot for Jamie Varner,” KO Reps posted on Twitter.
Varner, a former WEC champion, suffered the injury in the opening moments of the fight. The contest kicked off the pay-per-view main card, and despite being in obvious pain, Varner never gave in.
He continued to throw kicks and try to shoot for takedowns on Krause, who expressed his appreciation for his opponent.
“Such an honor to fight a guy like Jamie Varner,” he posted on Twitter. “Sorry it ended the way it did buddy. I wish you a speedy recovery.”
After trying to put Krause away at the end of the first round, Varner told the referee that he suffered a broken ankle and could not continue.
During the post-fight show, UFC president Dana White added “what an absolute stud that kid is” in regards to Varner continuing through the round.
